FAQ

What is Almotriptan, and what does it treat?

Almotriptan tablets effectively relieve migraine symptoms. The active ingredient is almotriptan, one of several triptan medications. All of these medications are prescribed to alleviate migraine headaches brought on by brain vessel inflammation and dilation.

Almotriptan 12.5 mg tablets are available in boxes of 6 tablets and are appropriate for use by adults aged 18 to 65.

What are headaches?

In the United Kingdom, 25 percent of women and 8 percent of men suffer from migraine headaches. Migraine episodes are believed to be at least partially inherited, so you may be more susceptible if someone in your immediate family also experiences them. You may find that the most severe attacks completely impede your daily activities. Among the symptoms of a migraine are:

  • nausea, throbbing headache pain, and increased intolerance to intense light, sound, and odour

About one-fourth of migraine sufferers experience a warning sign (or “aura”) prior to the onset of each headache. This could involve visual cues like blurred or distorted vision. A silent migraine is characterised by the occurrence of the aura but the absence of an episode. Migraine episodes typically last a few hours, but they can last up to three days. After a headache subsides, you may experience fatigue for several days.

Migraine attacks can be triggered by a variety of factors, including:

  • a poor diet
  • alcohol
  • caffeine, stress, and lack of sleep can trigger migraine attacks in some women during their period.

How does Almotriptan work?

It is not fully understood what causes migraine attacks to begin. However, it is believed that the throbbing pain is caused by the dilation of the brain’s blood vessels. Almotriptan is a serotonin (or 5HT) agonist, which means it stimulates serotonin receptors in the brain, causing blood vessels to constrict and alleviating pain.

Almotriptan is most effective when taken at the onset of a migraine, but it is also effective if taken later in the episode. Triptans do not prevent migraines, but they can be used in conjunction with preventative medications.

Substitutes for Almotriptan

There are a few over-the-counter medications that can be used to treat migraine pain and nausea initially. Among the products offered are:

Paracetamol\Ibuprofen\Aspirin\Migraleve
