Cetirizine 10 mg Tablets
Cetirizine is used to treat the symptoms of hay fever (allergy to pollen, dust, or other chemicals in the air) and allergy to other substances (such as dust mites, animal dander, cockroaches, and molds). These symptoms include sneezing, a runny nose, itchy, red, watery eyes, and an itchy nose or throat. Cetirizine is also used to relieve itching and redness produced by hives. Cetirizine, however, does not prevent hives or other allergic skin reactions. Cetirizine is an antihistamine medicine. It works by inhibiting the action of histamine, a chemical in the body that produces allergic reactions.
How should this medication be administered?
Cetirizine is available in tablet, chewable tablet, extended release tablet, and syrup (liquid) forms. It is typically taken once day, with or without food. Every day, take cetirizine around the same time. Follow the instructions on your package label exactly, and ask your doctor or pharmacist to explain any parts you don’t understand. Cetirizine should be taken exactly as prescribed. Do not take more or less of it, or take it more frequently than indicated on the package label or by your doctor.
Cetirizine should not be used to treat hives that are damaged or blistered, have an unusual colour, or do not itch. If you get these sorts of hives, contact your doctor.
If your hives do not improve after the first three days of treatment or if they last longer than six weeks, stop taking cetirizine and contact your doctor. Call your doctor if you don’t know what’s causing your hives.
If you are taking cetirizine to treat hives and experience any of the following symptoms, seek emergency medical attention immediately: Wheezing, drooling, dizziness, or loss of consciousness; trouble eating, speaking, or breathing; swelling in and around the mouth or swelling of the tongue; These could be indications of a potentially fatal allergic reaction known as anaphylaxis. If your doctor feels that your hives are causing anaphylaxis, he may prescribe an epinephrine injector (EpiPen). Cetirizine should not be used in place of an epinephrine injector.
