What is Levonorgestrel?
Levonorgestrel is an emergency contraceptive or “morning after pill” that is taken following unprotected sexual activity to prevent unintended pregnancy. Levonorgestrel is a hormonal contraceptive medication for women, in which the hormone Levonorgestrel prevents the release of the egg from the ovary, thereby preventing fertilisation by sperm (male reproductive cells). Levonorgestrel should be taken within 72 hours after unprotected sex; Levonorgestrel is more effective at preventing pregnancy when taken sooner.

How does Levonorgestrel function to prevent pregnancy?
Levonorgestrel works by preventing or delaying the release of the egg from the ovary, preventing it from being fertilised by sperm. Levonorgestrel mimics the hormone progesterone, which is naturally produced by the ovaries. To maximise its effectiveness, Levonorgestrel should be taken as soon as possible. Levonorgestrel is however effective when taken within 72 hours (3 days). The contraceptive pill Levonorgestrel does not interfere with other contraceptive methods.

How effective is Levonorgestrel for the prevention of unintended pregnancy?
It is crucial to take Levonorgestrel as soon as possible, as its efficacy diminishes over time.

95 percent effective when administered within 24 hours
85 percent effectiveness when taken within 24 to 48 hours
58% effectiveness when administered within 48-72 hours

Levonorgestrel may not work at all after 72 hours have passed since unprotected sex. Note that you do not have to wait until the morning after to take Levonorgestrel, as the term “morning after pill” may imply.

How do I take Levonorgestrel?
As soon as possible, one tablet of Levonorgestrel should be taken with water.

To maximise its effectiveness, levonorgestrel should be administered as soon as possible after unprotected sexual activity.

After 72 hours, Levonorgestrel’s efficacy is unknown, and the pill may be completely ineffective. Consult your physician for additional contraceptive advice after 72 hours. Levonorgestrel will not prevent pregnancy if you have unprotected sex after taking it.

If you vomit or have diarrhoea within two hours of taking the Levonorgestrel pill, it may not have been absorbed properly by the gut, which could compromise its efficacy. Therefore, you should seek the counsel of a professional and acquire additional contraception for emergency situations.

What’s the distinction between Levonelle and Levonorgestrel?
Levonelle is a brand name and therefore more expensive than Levonorgestrel. Both the brand-name (Levonelle) and generic version (Levonorgestrel) are medically equivalent; they contain the same active ingredient and perform the same function.
