What exactly is Symbicort and how is it used?
Symbicort turbohalers are a daily preventative treatment for asthma symptoms. This inhaler will aid in the control of your asthma and the prevention of future attacks. It contains two active ingredients that work together to combat asthma in two different ways. Budesonide, a corticosteroid, has an anti-inflammatory effect, while formoterol fumarate dihydrate relaxes the airway muscles. Those suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease can also use Symbicort turbohalers (COPD).
Turbohalers are available in three strengths: 100mcg budesonide / 6mcg formoterol fumarate dihydrate, 200mcg / 6mcg, and 400mcg / 12 mcg. Your doctor will prescribe the appropriate strength for you based on whether you are using Symbicort as your primary inhaler or solely as a preventer.
What exactly is asthma?
Over five million people in the United Kingdom suffer from asthma. An inflammation of the bronchi, which are the tubes that connect the windpipe to the lungs, causes the condition. The swelling in the bronchi constricts the airway passages and increases phlegm production. This causes breathing difficulty as well as further obstruction of the airways.
How does Symbicort function?
Inhalers are classified into two types: ‘preventers’ and’relievers.’ Both properties are present in Symbicort turbohalers. It is primarily a preventer containing the corticosteroid budesonide – once in the lungs, budesonide prevents cells in the area from producing the chemicals that cause inflammation. When used on a daily basis, Symbicort effectively manages airway inflammation, lowering your risk of an asthma attack.
Formoterol fumarate dihydrate is a long-acting beta 2 agonist that is also found in Symbicort. The beta 2 receptors in the lungs relax the muscles in the airways when stimulated. This causes the airways to dilate, which relieves asthma symptoms like coughing, wheezing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath. This is very similar to the function of a blue reliever inhaler. Short-acting beta 2 agonists are used in reliever inhalers. Because of this important distinction, Symbicort turbohalers will not provide immediate relief, and you will still need a reliever inhaler for emergencies.
Asthma is not a condition that can be treated effectively with over-the-counter medications. If you want to switch inhalers or look for another treatment, you should discuss it with your doctor at your regular asthma checkup. Please do not ‘Try’ a new inhaler without first consulting your doctor.
We recommend that you visit your regular GP on a regular basis to ensure that your inhalers are still controlling your asthma and are the best course of action for you.

Allow your pharmacist or asthma nurse to demonstrate the proper technique for using the device. This information will be included in the Product Information Leaflet as well.
