FAQ

What exactly is Valaciclovir?
Valaciclovir is an antiviral medicine. This prevents the virus from reproducing. Since the virus replicates very early in the infection, you will derive the greatest benefit from treatment if you begin taking Valaciclovir Tablets as soon as the first symptoms appear.

Tablets of valaciclovir are used to treat genital herpes infections in adults. Genital herpes is a viral infection caused by types 1 or 2 of the herpes simplex virus. Typically, HIV is transmitted via sexual contact. It causes painful blistering and burning or itching around the genitals. Valaciclovir is utilised to treat adult herpes infections. People who experience frequent outbreaks of genital herpes can also take Valaciclovir to prevent future outbreaks.

What exactly is suppression therapy?
If you experience six or more outbreaks per year, you may be a candidate for suppression treatment. Everyday suppression treatment helps to prevent recurrent outbreaks by 70 to 80 percent, and can sometimes prevent outbreaks entirely. Studies also indicate that outbreaks are milder and shorter with suppression treatment than without it.

How to administer Valaciclovir
To treat an outbreak of genital herpes, one tablet should be taken twice daily for five days.
Take one tablet once a day for suppression treatment.

How are Aciclovir and Valaciclovir dissimilar?
Aciclovir is closely related to Valaciclovir. Valaciclovir is a prodrug of aciclovir, which means that it is converted to aciclovir in the body after administration. The benefit of valaciclovir over aciclovir is that it does not need to be taken as frequently, making it easier for the patient to adhere to the regimen. Nevertheless, aciclovir is more economical, particularly for suppression treatment. Equally effective in treating genital herpes are both drugs.

How are Valtrex and Valaciclovir dissimilar?
Valaciclovir, the active ingredient in Valtrex, is available as an unbranded, generic tablet. Valaciclovir and Valtrex are medically equivalent; however, Valaciclovir is significantly less expensive.

Generic medicines contain the same active ingredient and are just as effective and medically equivalent as brand-name drugs, but they are less expensive. Manufacturers of generic drugs are required to demonstrate that their products are medically identical to their brand-name counterparts, i.e. they offer the same quality, potency, stability, and efficacy.

Generic medications must meet the same safety, quality, and efficacy standards as brand-name drugs. A generic drug must be “bioequivalent” to the original product in order to receive market approval from the European Medicines Agency and MHRA.

Adverse Effects
As with all medications, Valaciclovir should only be taken after carefully weighing the potential benefits and risks with a trained medical professional. Headache and nausea were the most common adverse reactions (ARs) reported by Valaciclovir patients.

Additionally, the following adverse effects have been reported:

Frequent (affects fewer than 1 in 10 patients taking the medication):

Feeling sick
Dizziness
Vomiting
Diarrhoea
Skin reaction following sun exposure (photosensitivity)
