FAQ

What is a deficiency in vitamin D?

Vitamin D is crucial for bone health. Some individuals are deficient in vitamin D; this condition is known as vitamin D deficiency.

Why do I require this exam?

Between October and March, the sunlight in Britain is insufficient to produce enough vitamin D, and up to a quarter of the population has deficient levels.

Deficiency in vitamin D can put individuals at risk for rickets or osteomalacia, and some research suggests that it may also be linked to heart disease, diabetes, asthma, and cognitive impairment in older adults.

Vitamin D deficiency susceptible populations:

According to the UK’s Chief Medical Officers, the following groups are particularly susceptible to vitamin D deficiency:

Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, particularly adolescents and young women.
Children younger than 5 years of age.
Those aged 65 and older
People who have minimal or no sun exposure. This includes people who cover up for cultural reasons, are housebound, or stay indoors for extended periods of time.
Limitations

The Vitamin D Rapid Test Cassette by Newfoundland is CE marked and only produces a semiquantitative analytical result. In order to confirm a result, a secondary analytical technique must be applied.
Errors in technique or procedure, as well as the presence of interfering substances in the whole blood specimen, may lead to inaccurate results.

How is the Vitamin D test conducted?

25-hydroxy Vitamin D is the primary  storage form in the body. Consequently, the overall status of vitamin D can be determined through the detection of 25-hydroxyvitamin D. Less than 30ng/mL of 25-hydroxyvitamin D indicates this vitamin Deficiency or Insufficiency. Vitamin D supplements can be recommended in these cases.

When is the test to be administered?

25-hydroxyvitamin D is primarily used in the clinical setting for the diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of rickets (in children), osteomalacia, postmenopausal osteoporosis, and renal osteopathy. Vitamin D deficiency is also linked to numerous other diseases, such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, autoimmune diseases, diabetes, and depression. Determine whether vitamin D supplements are necessary by monitoring your vitamin D levels. This Rapid Test may be administered at any time of day.

Could the outcome be incorrect?

The results are accurate if the instructions are followed precisely. However, the result may be inaccurate if the Vitamin D Rapid Test cassette becomes wet prior to performing the test, if insufficient blood is dispensed into the sample well, or if the number of buffer drops is less than 2 or greater than 3. The capillary dropper included in the kit allows you to collect the correct amount of blood. Due to the immunological principles involved, rare instances of false results are also possible. Consultation with a physician is always recommended for such immunologically-based tests.

How should the test be interpreted if the colour and intensity of the lines are distinct?

Please refer to the image and compare the intensity of the T line to the “Vitamin D Color Card” included in the kit.

Will the result be reliable if I read it 20 minutes after it has been calculated?

No. The result should be read 10 minutes after the buffer has been added. The result is no longer reliable after twenty minutes.

What must I do if the result is inadequate or deficient?

If the result is adequate, the Vitamin D level is at or above 30ng/mL and within the normal range.

Can my levels  be too high?

A case of Vitamin D toxicity (hypercalcemia) is uncommon, but cannot be ruled out based on the test results alone. If symptoms persist, it is recommended to consult a physician.
